A 1997 THOMAS JEFFERSON AWARD RECIPIENT
The Jefferson Awards honor the highest ideals and achievements in public service. NBC 5/Chicago and AT&T are pleased to take part in recognizing the unique dedication, sacrifices and accomplishments of the unsung heroes in our communities.
The Jefferson Awards were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Robert Taft, Jr. The awards are given in cooperation with the American Institute for Public Service.
On the local level, a nationwide network of Jefferson Awards media sponsors - newspapers, television stations and cable systems - solicits nominations of people who work to better their communities through volunteer and community services. They are ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectations of recognition or reward. In 1996, over 12,500 people were nominated for local Jefferson Awards. The American Institute's Board of Selectors chooses one representative from each media sponsor to attend the Jefferson Awards National Celebration of Service to America in Washington, D.C. Five of the local recipients are selected to receive Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Awards for Greatest Public Service Benefiting Local Communities.
